It has always been OK for women to dress sorta manly. But except for a pioneering few men it’s not really been all that acceptable for men to dress more femininely. In New York more than anywhere I’ve ever seen this trend is really apparent. Nearly all young men are wearing skin tight pants and funky tops. And guys were constantly whizzing by me in a confusing array of lycra, lace and shaped eye brows.
I passed this guy (he could have been walking faster but he was busy texting) who at first I thought was a woman with a short haircut but he had a van dyke mustache and long goatee. (I didn’t feel bold enough to take a picture of him from the front.) But it got me to think about my own selection of gender stereotypes. I have them, I just am not sure what they are. I don’t see the point of dressing in what appears to be women’s clothes if you’re going to ruin the look with facial hair. I mean, I don’t mind it, I just don’t get it.
