Frosting fail

Or should I call it icing inadequacy? I made Florence’s orange cake for my nephew’s birthday and felt compelled to frost/ice it. I think what I was going for was icing, like drizzled stuff. Seems more like icing but whatever it was, it was not right. I followed the recipe but I added orange peel and orange bitters and it broke, curdled, separated, whatever the proper term is, it looked like, to quote Barbara Pym, unpleasantness. I debated about just leaving it, I mean, it was edible but really, it was grotesque.

I wiped it off and frosted it the way God intended cake to be. It was delicious. As always.
